Is it true that Smartphones can make teens easily depressed and suicidal?
Teenagers are vulnerable to sudden mental state changes that sometimes lead to a bad direction, call it suicide. Some think that one of the objects that are very attached to us today, Smartphone, can be a trigger, especially for teenagers to commit suicide, is it real?
Just go back in time ... when did the smartphone era begin? Maybe on January 9, 2007 when Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs launched the first version of the iPhone...? But, however, the smartphone has been available long before the iPhone exists.
Yes, the smartphone has changed many things in life easier. But according to a recent report from The Atlantic, teens who grew up in the smartphone era are more prone to depression and have thoughts of suicide. How come?
Reporting from PhoneArena, in those studies those born between 1995 to 2012 are referred to as the iGen group. These are the people who never live without an internet connection in their lives and they are even more depressed than the millennium generation. This iGen group connects to friends digitally using a smartphone. One of the bad effects of excessive use of smartphones at an early age is to make them uncomfortable interacting with friends in the real world.
The Atlantic also revealed some interesting statistics. That 8th graders who spend 10 or more hours a week on social media are 56 times more likely to be unhappy than others of the same age who use less social media.
Those who spend 6 to 9 hours a week on social media, 47 percent are more likely to be unhappy than those who use less social media. Of course, this information is very important to know by parents and includes you iGen group itself. What do you think? Do you agree?
In conclusion, the more time teenagers spend to see the smartphone screen, the more likely the depression is. Although not everything like that, but we as the people closest should be responsive if something like that happens to our families are still teenagers.
